Sena Clara Creston, assistant professor in the art department, will be showing her artwork Plastescape at the Illuminating Perspectives exhibition at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts.
Plastescape is designed to question the relationship between humans and the other. The Huminal, an animalistic humanoid robot paces around The Plastic Garden. It’s a sentry protecting its lair. When the Huminal “senses” an intruder, it stops and turns its head and glows red, voicing its displeasure, fear and aggression. When approached, flowers in The Plastic Garden go from fading calmly, to fluttering nervously, to snapping aggressively. The viewer is then forced to respond to this challenge, deciding whether to heed the warnings of a being of unknown power and back off, or confront the artwork to be examined and understood. Upon inspection, familiar materials reveal a second ambiguous relationship. The Huminal and cave are built from discarded plastic water bottles and plastic bags; the bringer of life and the polluter of land. We made this angry environment where we are not welcome.
There is an opening reception from 4:00 - 6:00 on January 6th, 2024 and the exhibition runs through February 4th.
